Thus said Bacolod City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran during the launching of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) sponsored by the Bacolod City Gender and Development (GAD) Council held Friday, November 25, 2016 at the Bacolod Government Center (BGC) Lobby. Familiaran further said that there are laws that protect women. “It must be cleared that these laws are existing, not because women are weaker vessels as they say, but because our women are susceptible to abuses because of their strength of patience, fortitude and forbearance in order to preserve their relationships in the name of chances,” he added. The office of Councilor Cindy Rojas, Committee Chair on Gender and Women is in charge of the lineup of activities which include livelihood training on November 28-29 from 8am to 5pm at the BGC lobby; December 1 & 2 Gender & Sensitivity Training at BGC Annex and SP Session hall respectively; December 5 & 6 Role of Women in Times of Calamities at BGC Annex, December 7 On-the-spot Slogan Making Contest; December 9 Health Camp and December 12 Women’s Got Talent at SM Event Center at 1:00 pm. According to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), a machinery for gender equality and women’s empowerment, “the 18-day campaign kicked off last November 25, the date celebrating the International Day on Violence Against Women and December 10 as International Human Rights Day in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation.” Moreover,“ in the Philippines it has expanded until December 12 which marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Crime, thus making it an 18-day campaign.” Part of the launch was the signing of the covenant to stop VAW and a zumba activity dubbed as “ Zumbabaye” where participants were encouraged to wear anything “orange” in support of the “Orange your icon” activity of the PWC in relation to the 18-day campaign to end VAW. Meanwhile, women advocates who participated in the launching ceremony were Councilor Sonya Verdeflor representing Soroptimist International along with other members Pacita Adeva, Celia Ferrer, Baby Gopalor, Sandra Ruth Sycip, SPO4 Arlene Torrendon of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk of the Bacolod City Police Office, Dr. Joanna R.
