The Bacolod-Negros Economic Highway, a major project being implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways to help decongest the diversion road in Bacolod City, may cost about P5 billion, Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said yesterday. Villar, who was in Bacolod yesterday for the inauguration of the P365 million Araneta-Magsaysay flyover, said that next year, they will allocate P1 billion for the economic highway. Villar said the second flyover is part of the program of the government to help decongest traffic. “This is just the start. We have many more projects to be implemented in Bacolod,” he said. The Bacolod-Negros Economic Highway will serve as another route from the airport to Bacolod, while part of it will lead to northern Negros, Villar said. Every year, they will allocate a budget for the economic highway so it will be finished before the end of the term of the President, he said. Construction of the economic highway will be continuous and as sections are completed they can already be utilized, Villar said. Villarsaid PresidentRodrigo Duterteis focused on infrastructure which is badly needed. “We will catch up on our infrastructure deficit. We need to invest in infrastructure in Bacolod to fulfill its potential,” Villar said. These infrastructure projects need the support of the local officials, he said adding that “You are lucky in Bacolod because your officials have vision and you should be expecting more projects in the city.” Meanwhile, Bacolod Rep. Gasataya said he told Villar that they have a request for two more flyovers for Bacolod. Hopefully, by next year the city could have another one. He said the presence of Villar shows how important the project is to him and for all the people. The construction of the Araneta-Magsaysay flyover started on April 1 and ended on Dec.18. Villar said they are doing studies on additional flyovers for Bacolod and if they are feasible then definitely they will be constructed. Mayor EvelioLeonardia said Bacolod is growing and the city cannot catch up with new roads. So flyovers are solutions to the traffic problem. Leonardia said this is a dream come true and they thank Villar for making their dream come true. He told Villar that they have other dreams and they hope he could also make them come true, Leonardia said. Bacolod District Engineer Abraham Villarealsaid the second flyover was opened to traffic after its inauguration yesterday. The maximum weight of vehicles allowed to pass the flyover is 36 tons, he said. Also present at the inauguration of the Araneta-Magsaysay flyover were DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain and Economic Counselor Laurent Estrade of the Embassy of France in the Philippines, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran and Councilors Cindy Rojas and Bart Orola.*CGS BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
